Additionally, maternal antibodies have been found in breastmilk suggesting that some passive immunity (short-term protection from donated antibodies) can also be transferred to the infant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vaccinating people who are breastfeeding does not diminish the volume or quality of breastmilk produced. Conversely, lactation can be impacted when a breastfeeding person becomes unwell (such as with a vaccine-preventable disease).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Recommendations<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">People who are breastfeeding should be up to date with the vaccines recommended on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/publications\/national-immunisation-program-schedule?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u0930\u093e\u0937\u094d\u091f\u094d\u0930\u0940\u092f \u091f\u0940\u0915\u093e\u0915\u0930\u0923 \u0915\u093e\u0930\u094d\u092f\u0915\u094d\u0930\u092e (NIP)<\/a>. Additional risk factors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/travel-medicine\/\">travel<\/a>, occupation and <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/immunosuppression-and-vaccines\/\">underlying medical conditions<\/a> may also mean that further vaccines or additional doses are recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A person does not need to stop breastfeeding before or after they receive a vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Where a <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/maternal-vaccination-during-pregnancy\/\">\u0917\u0930\u094d\u092d\u0935\u0924\u0940<\/a> person has been found to be seronegative (not immune) to <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/measles\/\">\u0916\u0938\u0930\u093e<\/a>, mumps, rubella or <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/varicella\/\">\u0935\u0948\u0930\u0940\u0938\u0947\u0932\u093e<\/a>, these vaccines can be administered post-partum while breastfeeding (noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/vaccine-platforms\/\">live-attenuated<\/a> vaccines are contraindicated during pregnancy).<\/span><\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">People who are breastfeeding should be up to date with the current annual <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/influenza-vaccine-recommendations\/\"><div id=\"space\"><\/div><\/a> vaccine. If they did not receive any influenza vaccine while pregnant, or if the influenza vaccine they received during pregnancy was for the previous year\u2019s influenza season, they should be vaccinated while breastfeeding. Vaccination protects both the vaccine recipient and the breastfeeding infant. This is important to provide some protection to the infant before they can receive their own influenza vaccination from 6 months of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\">\u090f\u0939\u0924\u093f\u092f\u093e\u0924<\/h2>\n<h3>Rubella<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">It is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">safe to administer rubella vaccines to people who are breastfeeding.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">In rare cases the live-attenuated <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">\u091f\u0940\u0915\u093e <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">virus may be secreted in breastmilk<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">If this occurs, the b<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">reastfeeding i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\"><div id=\"space\"><\/div><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">fant<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">may experience <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW251232839 BCX0\">mild symptoms <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW251232839 BCX0\">associated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW251232839 BCX0\"> with<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW251232839 BCX0\">rubella<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">\u092f\u093e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\"> no <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251232839 BCX0\">symptoms at all. For more information, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au\/contents\/vaccine-preventable-diseases\/rubella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian Immunisation Handbook: Rubella<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u0939\u0947\u092a\u0947\u091f\u093e\u0907\u091f\u093f\u0938 \u092c\u0940<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It is safe for a person who is positive for the <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/hepatitis-b\/\">\u0939\u0947\u092a\u0947\u091f\u093e\u0907\u091f\u093f\u0938 \u092c\u0940<\/a> virus to breastfeed their infant as long as the infant has received hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) and a birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine. These are recommended, and ideally administered on the day of birth (preferably within 12 hours), at the same time, in separate thighs. HBIG needs to be administered within 48 hours after birth (efficacy is significantly reduced if administration is delayed &gt; 48 hours after birth) and the vaccine up to 7 days after birth. The routine scheduled 3 dose course of hepatitis B vaccine should also be completed at 6 weeks, 4 months and 6 months (as per the NIP).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559685&quot;:-540,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:270,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The infant should have serology performed 3 to 12 months post the 6-month dose of hepatitis B vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u092a\u0940\u0932\u093e \u092c\u0941\u0916\u093e\u0930<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Administering <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/yellow-fever\/\">\u092a\u0940\u0932\u093e \u092c\u0941\u0916\u093e\u0930<\/a> vaccines to people who are breastfeeding infants less than 9 months of age should be avoided due to the potential transfer of the live-attenuated vaccine virus through breastmilk. Younger infants (&lt; 9 months of age) have a greater risk of developing yellow fever vaccine-associated neurotropic disease (YF-AND), a serious adverse event that can occur following yellow fever vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Individual advice should be sought from a travel\/immunisation specialist if a breastfeeding person cannot avoid or delay travel to a yellow fever endemic area. If the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks, then vaccination can be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Access<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vaccines can be administered through local council immunisation services, accredited pharmacies, GP clinics and Aboriginal Health Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Influenza vaccines are not funded for breastfeeding people who do not have additional risk factors but can be privately purchased via their provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\">\u0906\u092e\u0924\u094c\u0930 \u092a\u0930 \u092a\u0942\u091b\u0947 \u091c\u093e\u0928\u0947 \u0935\u093e\u0932\u0947 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0936\u094d\u0928<\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/div><div id=\"mpc_accordion-286a3c52f0c267c\" class=\"mpc-accordion mpc-init mpc-transition accordion-tab\" ><ul class=\"mpc-accordion__content\"><li class=\"mpc-accordion__item\"><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__heading mpc-transition mpc-typography--default\"><div data-id=\"mpc_icon-656a3c52f0c2663\" class=\"mpc-icon mpc-init mpc-transition mpc-effect-fade mpc-icon-hover\"><div class=\"mpc-icon-wrap\"><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-regular mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_right-down\"><\/i><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-hover mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_left-up\"><\/i><\/div><\/div><h3>Can people who are breastfeeding be in contact with someone who has recently been vaccinated?<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__content mpc-container\" ><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__wrapper mpc-typography--default\"><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">Yes, it is safe <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">for anyone breastfeeding <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">to be around <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">others <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">who have recently been vaccinated<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">(including <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">those who have <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\">received<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247765319 BCX0\"> a live-attenuated vaccine).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li><li class=\"mpc-accordion__item\"><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__heading mpc-transition mpc-typography--default\"><div data-id=\"mpc_icon-656a3c52f0c2663\" class=\"mpc-icon mpc-init mpc-transition mpc-effect-fade mpc-icon-hover\"><div class=\"mpc-icon-wrap\"><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-regular mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_right-down\"><\/i><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-hover mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_left-up\"><\/i><\/div><\/div><h3>Can maternal antibodies in breastmilk interfere with a baby\u2019s response to their own vaccines?<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__content mpc-container\" ><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__wrapper mpc-typography--default\"><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Antibodies transferred through breastmilk can impact an infant\u2019s immune response to their own vaccines; however, this has been considered when determining infant vaccine recommendations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559685&quot;:-540,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evidence from low- and middle-income countries<\/a> shows that maternal rotavirus antibodies present in breastmilk contributed to a decrease in infant immune response to rotavirus vaccination. However, the resulting infant immune response was still adequate in protecting against disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/li><li class=\"mpc-accordion__item\"><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__heading mpc-transition mpc-typography--default\"><div data-id=\"mpc_icon-656a3c52f0c2663\" class=\"mpc-icon mpc-init mpc-transition mpc-effect-fade mpc-icon-hover\"><div class=\"mpc-icon-wrap\"><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-regular mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_right-down\"><\/i><i class=\"mpc-icon-part mpc-hover mpc-transition  eti eti_arrow_left-up\"><\/i><\/div><\/div><h3>Does maternal immunosuppression commenced whilst breastfeeding impact an infant\u2019s vaccine schedule?<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__content mpc-container\" ><div class=\"mpc-accordion-item__wrapper mpc-typography--default\"><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">It is unlikely that maternal immunosuppressive medication, commenced whilst breastfeeding, will be transferred to an infant via breastmilk. These infants can be safely immunised according to the vaccines recommended on the NIP.<\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u090f\u0915 <strong>exception<\/strong> to this is Rituiximab, with studies showing that maternal Rituximab has been found in breastmilk. The FDA recommends that breastfeeding be avoided for 6 months following receipt of this medication to prevent transmission to the infant.<\/p>\n<p>Immunosuppressive medications are much more likely to cross the placenta. Therefore, when they are administered during pregnancy it is important to consider an infant&#8217;s vaccine schedule.
