Among healthy children, 3% will have a febrile seizure in their lifetime. Febrile seizures most commonly occur between the ages of 6 months and 6 years. Febrile seizures can be classified as either simple or complex<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span of developing epilepsy compared to the rest of the population.<\/span><span seizures and vaccines<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fever is a common side effect following vaccination with certain vaccines (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/meningococcal\/\">meningococcal B<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/covid-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/measles\/\">MMR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/varicella\/\">MMRV<\/a> V\u00e0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/influenza-vaccine-recommendations\/\"><div id=\"space\"><\/div><\/a>). Fever generally occurs within 48 hours of inactivated vaccines and 5 to 10 days after the administration of live-attenuated vaccines. Although vaccines can cause fevers, febrile seizures are not common after vaccination. Vaccine-proximate febrile seizures are not more severe than febrile seizures that are not temporally associated with vaccines. Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/epilepsy-and-immunisation\/\">MVEC: Epilepsy<\/a> \u0111\u1ec3 bi\u1ebft th\u00eam th\u00f4ng tin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>khuy\u1ebfn ngh\u1ecb<\/h2>\n<h3>Vaccine setting<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Children with a history of simple vaccine-proximate febrile seizures or seizures from another cause can be safely vaccinated in the community without the need for additional monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Children who have experienced a complex vaccine-proximate febrile seizure, vaccine-proximate status epilepticus or vaccine-proximate afebrile seizures should be referred to a <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/specialist-immunisation-services\/\">ph\u00f2ng ti\u00eam ch\u1ee7ng chuy\u00ean khoa<\/a> for further assessment before receiving further vaccinations. These seizures should be reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/adverse-events-reporting-australia\/\">adverse event reporting service<\/a> in your jurisdiction. In Victoria, this is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/saefvic\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SAEFVIC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If parents are concerned about the safety of vaccination or if providers wish to defer advice to a specialist, referral to a specialist immunisation clinic can be considered for any child with a history of seizures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW267784556 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267784556 BCX0\">Prophylactic paracetamol<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It is widely recognised that children receiving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/meningococcal\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bexsero<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (meningococcal B vaccine) are more likely to experience fevers following vaccination. MVEC recommends children under 4 years receive prophylactic paracetamol (15 mg\/kg per dose) prior to vaccination, as well as 2 subsequent doses (6 hours apart) to reduce the likelihood and severity of fever. This should be administered regardless of whether the child is experiencing a fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The administration of prophylactic paracetamol prior to other vaccines is not routinely recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>C\u00e1c bi\u1ec7n ph\u00e1p ph\u00f2ng ng\u1eeba<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) vaccines are not recommended as a first dose of a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)-containing vaccine in children under 4 years due to the increased risk of fever (and possible febrile seizures).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Should MMRV vaccines be inadvertently administered as the first dose of an MMR-containing vaccine, the child\u2019s parent should be counselled to monitor for fevers and administer paracetamol as required.
