An adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) is any untoward medical occurrence that happens following the administration of a vaccine. It can be coincidentally associated with immunisation, without necessarily being caused by the vaccine. C<\/span>ommon side effects from vaccines are usually mild and short\u2011lasting.<\/span> S<\/span>evere side effects are rare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Monitoring vaccine safety during development<\/a> V\u00e0 post\u2011licensure adverse event surveillance<\/a> are important ways both to ensure safe vaccination programs and to maintain community confidence in vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n

AEFI\u2011CAN (Adverse Events Following Immunisation \u2013 Clinical Assessment Network)<\/span><\/a> l\u00e0 <\/span>a collaboration that<\/span> extends <\/span>importantly <\/span>both to<\/span> vaccine safety monitoring and <\/span>\u0110\u1ebeN <\/span>supporting individuals who <\/span>may<\/span> have experience<\/span>d<\/span> AEFIs.<\/span> \u00a0A formal, <\/span>clinical<\/span> collaboration between Australia state\u2011 and territo<\/span>r<\/span>y\u2011based vaccine safety services (including adult and paediatric immunisation, <\/span>and infectious disease and allergy specialists<\/span>)<\/span>, AEFI can also includes representatives from the Qu\u1ea3n l\u00fd h\u00e0ng h\u00f3a tr\u1ecb li\u1ec7u (TGA)<\/a>, most state and territor<\/span>y<\/span> health <\/span>departments<\/span>,<\/span> and the immunisation branch <\/span>of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Purpose<\/h2>\n

As a national network, AEFI\u2011CAN works collaboratively to clinically assess and <\/span>support individual<\/span>S<\/span> who have experienced<\/span> M\u1ed9t<\/span> serious or unexpected <\/span>AEFI<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>AEFI-C\u00d3 TH\u1ec2 <\/span><\/span><\/span>enables collaborators to investigate <\/span>possible safety<\/span> signals in real time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
