PAEDS enhances data available from other Australian surveillance systems by providing prospective, detailed clinical and laboratory information on children with selected conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The current conditions under surveillance by the PAEDS network are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">acute flaccid paralysis (condition causing paralysis and loss of tone in one or more limbs, which can be caused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/polio\/\">b\u1ec7nh b\u1ea1i li\u1ec7t<\/a> <div id=\"space\"><\/div><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">intussusception (rare type of bowel obstruction seen in infants)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/varicella\/\">th\u1ee7y \u0111\u1eadu<\/a> (chickenpox) and <a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/zoster\/\">herpes zoster<\/a> (shingles) requiring hospitalisation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/pertussis-whooping-cough\/\">ho g\u00e0<\/a> (whooping cough)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">acute childhood encephalitis (inflammation and\/or infection of the brain)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/influenza-vaccine-recommendations\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><div id=\"space\"><\/div><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/meningococcal\/\">invasive meningococcal disease<\/a> (severe bacterial sepsis and\/or meningitis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">invasive group A streptococcus (severe bacterial infection)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/kawasaki-disease-and-immunisation\/\">b\u1ec7nh Kawasaki<\/a> (rare disease in which blood vessels throughout the body become inflamed)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gram-negative bloodstream infections (serious bacterial infections in the bloodstream)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/covid-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a> (SARS-CoV-2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">PIMS-TS (Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/references\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv\/\">RSV<\/a> (respiratory syncytial virus)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">social research (on attitudes towards and access to influenza vaccination in Australia).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Access<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">PAEDS consists of a network of clinicians and public health researchers in 8 tertiary paediatric hospitals across Australia.<\/span><span
