SAEFVIC (Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination <\/span>In<\/span> the Community) is the central reporting service in Victoria for any significant adverse event following <\/span>immunisation<\/span> (AEFI).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An AEFI is any untoward medical occurrence that happens following the administration of a vaccine. It can be coincidentally associated with immunisation, without necessarily being caused by the vaccine. A <\/span>vaccine error<\/span><\/a> is also considered an AEFI and may be related to the way a vaccine was stored, prepared or administered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Common side effects from vaccines are usually mild and short\u2011lasting. Severe side effects are rare. Purpose<\/h2>\n

Monitoring vaccine safety <\/span>during development<\/span><\/a> and through post\u2011licensure adverse event surveillance<\/a> are important ways both to ensure safe vaccination programs and to maintain community confidence in vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Post-licensure monitoring is conducted via a number of different mechanisms, one of which is through reporting AEFI to jurisdictional and national authorities. Reporting AEFI allows the rapid investigation of any potential vaccine or system problem and ensures vaccinees get timely medical advice and support.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reporting adverse events is not mandatory in Victoria, however doing so allows the rapid investigation of any potential vaccine or system problems by Victorian and national health authorities (Therapeutic Goods Administration).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Following the report of adverse events, SAEFVIC can <\/span>facilitate<\/span> individualised<\/span> clinical <\/span>assistance<\/span> for patients and families affected by an AEFI. This may be done via a face-to-face or telehealth consultation with a specialist or with an <\/span>immunisation<\/span> nurse over the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

B\u00e1o c\u00e1o cho SAEFVIC<\/h2>\n

Any vaccinated individual, parent<\/span><\/span><\/span>\/guardian<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span>immunisation<\/span> provider<\/span><\/span><\/span> or treating medical practitioner can report an AEFI to SAEFVIC. Reports are <\/span><\/span><\/span>made via <\/span><\/span><\/span>SAEFVAC<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is important to note that the <\/span>SAEFVIC<\/span> does not provide emergency care and is a reporting service only.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
