MVEC strongly disagrees with\u00a0the\u00a0changes\u00a0to\u00a0messaging\u00a0recently published on the United States\u2019 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web\u00a0page \u2018Autism and Vaccines\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a vaccine to be administered in Australia, it must adhere to the strict requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and have supportive evidence to satisfy the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). Australian health authorities involved in vaccine policy and decision\u2011making are independent of political agenda, influence and financial gain. Transparency and appropriate management of conflicts of interest are integral to maintaining the high standards required to fulfil this responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australia has robust vaccine safety monitoring systems that include both active and passive adverse event reporting, and signal detection and investigation. Safety surveillance continues after vaccines are approved and rolled out to a population. There are no safety signals relating to any vaccine (including MMR which protects against

<\/div><\/a>, mumps and rubella) or vaccine ingredient (including aluminium) causing autism.<\/span><\/p>\n

CDC\u2019s recent change to messaging asserts that the statement \u201cvaccines do not cause autism\u201d is not evidence\u2011based. However, this ignores scientific methodology, whereby researchers seek evidence for a particular event happening \u2013 i.e. vaccines causing autism \u2013 rather trying to\u00a0prove\u00a0<\/span><\/i>that an event can\u00a0<\/span>never<\/span><\/i> happen.\u00a0Dozens of studies\u00a0involving millions of children\u00a0have found no link between vaccines and autism.\u00a0These studies\u00a0are\u00a0evidence\u00a0that\u00a0vaccines do not\u00a0cause autism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Spreading vaccine misinformation and disinformation\u00a0threatens trust\u00a0not only\u00a0in\u00a0vaccines but also\u00a0in\u00a0the processes\u00a0in place to ensure our safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vaccines have saved 6 lives every minute since 1974. 154 million deaths have been prevented in the last 50 years. The vaccines used in Australia are safe and effective.<\/p>\n
