{"id":22449,"date":"2025-12-02T11:41:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T00:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/?p=22449"},"modified":"2025-12-02T13:11:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T02:11:15","slug":"strengthening-aefi-causality-assessment-in-lao-pdr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mvec.mcri.edu.au\/zh\/strengthening-aefi-causality-assessment-in-lao-pdr\/","title":{"rendered":"Strengthening AEFI Causality Assessment in Lao PDR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MVEC\u00a0Director Prof Nigel Crawford and Education Nurse Coordinator Rachael McGuire,\u00a0recently\u00a0travelled to Lao PDR\u00a0in support of\u00a0vaccine safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Delivering a workshop funded by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/laos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO\u00a0Lao\u00a0PDR\u00a0Country\u00a0Office<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance<\/a> and the Australian Government through the <a href=\"https:\/\/indopacifichealthsecurity.dfat.gov.au\/partnerships-healthy-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Partnerships for a Healthy Region<\/a> initiative,\u00a0they were joined by colleagues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prof Kristine Macartney (<a href=\"https:\/\/ncirs.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCIRS<\/a>), Bernice Sarpong (NCIRS), and Prof Julie Leask (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Sydney<\/a>).\u00a0Over 3 days,\u00a0members of the National\u00a0Immunisation\u00a0Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), Laos AEFI committee,\u00a0clinicians and specialists\u00a0explored\u00a0management\u00a0and reporting\u00a0of\u00a0adverse events,\u00a0adverse event case definitions,\u00a0causality\u00a0assessments, and adverse event communication.\u00a0At the conclusion of the teaching, it was\u00a0exciting\u00a0to see our Laos counterparts\u00a0set themselves\u00a0goals\u00a0to work towards\u00a0that will\u00a0strengthen\u00a0the country\u2019s\u00a0immunisation\u00a0safety\u00a0practices in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the workshop, Nigel and Rachael were invited to visit Mahasot Hospital, Vientiane, and the Children\u2019s Hospital, Vientiane. Observing in-country immunisation practice and capacity, and understanding the challenges of the current systems proved invaluable for identifying ways to increase both immunisation coverage and trust in vaccines.
